How I Almost Fell In Love With A Married Man

By Oluwashantel |

I met a married man. I didn’t know he was married and now that I think of it, I should ask my friend who introduced us for an explanation. Did he too not know his friend was married?
Anyway, Mr K (let’s call the married man that) was amazing.

We got introduced but we were in different parts of the world so we used video calls and texts and phone calls to keep in touch. Mr K was amazing. He made my matters his own. He was there for me and made me so comfortable that, in my head, I had decided that when we eventually met, if he didn’t have body odour or mouth odour or give off a serial-killer vibe, I would date him, no question. Mr K was amazing. Fast forward to when we met: he was a perfect gentleman. Opening doors, picking me up to take me wherever I wanted, taking me out to dinner and all that roses and petals kind of stuff. A friend of mine met up with us once and after she had left, she sent a text to say “Babe, you got engaged and didn’t tell me?” I was confused. She explained that the way Mr K was all over me, she was convinced that we were getting married. I laughed.

I was waiting for him to ask me out officially (yes, I can be traditional like that…hehe) and in my head, I was rehearsing how I would say the YES. Then the first text message came: “Hello, my name is Mrs K. Mr K’s wife. Please leave my husband alone”. I guess she noticed it came in as an iMessage because she went on to send me photos. Photos of her family. Photos of Mr K, with big smiles and bubbly eyes, holding his two sons and wife. Photos of a ‘perfect and happy’ family.

I don’t know the words to describe how I felt. I was ashamed, I was annoyed, I was disappointed. I felt played. I felt sorry for Mrs K. All the emotions hit me all at once.

I jejely replied with “I am so sorry. I had no idea he was married. Thank you for telling me. God bless”. Mr K called the next day and I asked him if he was married.

Ah, baby, this kind of question today. Is something wrong?”

Me: “No. I just want to know if you are married.

Let’s talk about it later…leave that one.

Me: “Ok.

I hung up and haven’t picked up his calls since. But I think about it constantly. What was his game plan? Make me fall in love and then keep me and his wife? I won’t pretend to be naive and think girls don’t date married men but at least, some girls get to do it with full disclosure. Why would a married man want to date a girl and try to make it look like he’s not married? Why will a man be married and come into a girl’s life and then be so all up in her business that, like a wolf pisses around it’s territory to mark it – everyone who sees her feels she is with ‘someone’ – why will you be married and be blocking a girls chances of meeting someone? I don’t get it!
