How To Choose Your Dream Wedding Dress

By Ayo Al |

Every woman has probably dreamt about how perfect her wedding gown is supposed to be and look. In fact, for many brides, it’s the toughest part of the wedding process. Choosing the perfect gown doesn’t have to be a Herculean task, in fact, it can be a very easy process.

Trying to make a choice? Here are some tips that will make the process easier.

 1. Know the type of dress you want

Every lady has a preference, this preference might have to do with body shape, height...

Some brides prefer ball dresses, embellished gowns, and the likes. To narrow down your search and make the process easier, know the kinda dress you want before embarking on a dress search. This saves a lot of wahala.

2. Start your dress search early enough

Finding the perfect dress may take longer than you envisage, so start searching at least 6 months to your wedding date. Never leave getting a dress to the last minute. You definitely do not want to pick a wrong dress out of haste. Start at least three months before your wedding to avoid any last minute trouble.

 3. Set a budget

A friend of mine got married very recently and she spent almost a hundred thousand on her dress. Another friend of mine is getting married soon and has blatantly refused to buy a dress- yes, she wants to rent one because she believes it would be cheaper. So, it is very important to mark out how much you’re willing to spend on your dress and then tailor your search to dresses that fit your budget. This way, you find just the right dress for you but within your budget.

4. Consider the wedding venue

Is your wedding venue tight? Is it spacious? Is there adequate space to dance and move? Is it very far? Are there stairs? All these are some of the things to consider when picking a wedding dress. You do not pick a dress without considering how convenient this dress would be for your venue. So when picking a dress, have a location in mind.

 5.Take your trusted friends along

Of course, you shouldn’t go dress shopping with a crowd, just two or three of your really close friends/family members who will give their honest opinion. This is where trust come in, take those friends who you know wouldn't lie to you about how you look in a dress to please you but would be truthful.

6.Try on as many dresses as possible

Before settling on a dress, make sure that you have exhausted as many options as possible. Never pick the first dress you set your eyes on because most times, they might not be the best option. Calmly, go through different dresses, checking the fit and how well it goes with your budget and when well planned, you’d make the perfect choice.

7. Make your choice on the fit and not the size.

When deciding on a dress, never be deceived by the size tag. Ensure you make your choice on the fit and not the size tag. A dress may carry a size 12 tag but might not flatter your shape appropriately. The best thing then is to wear the dresses and choose the one with the perfect fit. My sister, Warri no dey carry last o. Shine your eyes wella.

 8. Go along with shoes you might probably wear

You would agree with me that heels give another look to a dress. Getting with a good shoe or sandal for your dress fittings would make the process easier. There would be no need to stand on tip toes trying to peer into the mirror or trying to see how the dress would look with heels. Go with your high shoes and save some stress.

9. Go with the right kind of underwear

If you have a strapless dress in mind, then why not go for a fitting with the perfect bra- a strapless one.  If you have a certain neckline in mind, you should go with the right kind of bra. Going with the right kind of underwear makes it easier to choose a dress. A dress might be perfect for you but you wouldn’t see the fir if you wear the wrong underwear.

Picking a wedding dress should not be a headache. With the right planning, and right group of people, this would not be such a hassle.
